So then I'll say this again: look into PAM. PAM will allow you to authenticate against the users system password. The 'perl-Authen-PAM' package on EnGarde provides a perl interface to PAM (in fact, this is what userpass uses).

If you want to use HTTP auth (ala .htaccess) then you will have to write your own pages for the user to change their password. This is not hard to do.
