Suggestion to post warnings about using a mail server.

Postby usalabs on Sun Mar 30, 2008 1:49 pm

I would like to suggest placing warnings to users of not just Engarde but any other Linux distro, that want to use the mail funcion, warning them that:-

"Unless one purchases a static IP address, it is now impossible to use any type of mail server to send out mail via WAN, mainly because domains are now refusing mail sent by dynamic IP's (either using highspeed cable, or DSL), Yahoo, Gmail, MSN, and Hotmail to name but a few refuse ALL mails sent by dynamic IP's, unless one pays for an external relay service."

Just to prove it, I sent a test email to gmail and this is what I got back:-

host gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com[209.85.147.114] said:
550-5.7.1 [IP] The IP you're using to send email is not authorized
550-5.7.1 to send email directly to our servers. Please use 550 5.7.1 the
SMTP relay at your service provider instead. n40si4518114wag.34 (in reply
to end of DATA command)

When I conntacted gmail, they said it's because of my IP address is dynamic, and unfortuneately, my service provider dos NOT provide an SMTP relay service.

What your looking for is sometimes called a smarthost (smtp relay) and all you have to do is use your isp smtp server address and these error messages go away.
