NIC not detected upon install

Postby bbuhlman on Thu Oct 16, 2008 11:07 am

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help, I installed the Community version 3.20 yesterday and my NIC was not detected during the install. I new what nic I had and found the driver and did an insmod and ifconfig for eth0 and added a route. The machine is a Dell GX260 with an internal e1000 NIC. In the console the interface is up and I can ping out and around. I can launch the webtool and login fine but the NIC info I entered at the command line is not seen in webtool and webtool doesn't think I have an eth0 interface. I tried to create an interface and webtool let me but it created eth1.

How can I rescan for the new hardware or make webtool recognize the interface is up and working?

Thanks,
Bill

hi Bill

The network module of the WebTool lists the interfaces by reading /etc/network/interfaces.
So I would look in there to make sure it's formated right.

Hi Bill,
It is formatted correctly. I only have one NIC in the machine and I've command line configured it for eth0. There is like I said an entry for NIC 1 that I entered via the webtool. It is formatted correctly, but I don't have two NIC's.

How do I make webtool realize I have a working NIC on eth0 if it didn't set it up during the install?

hi

In /etc/network/interfaces is eth0 listed? I am guessing not since it's not listed in the webTool.

How do I make webtool realize I have a working NIC on eth0 if it didn't set it up during the install?

Try adding eth0 to /etc/network/interfaces with an text editor.

Please elaborate upon "adding eth0 to /etc/network/interfaces".

NM - I found a definitive answer in Section 10.6.1.1 of the Debian Reference.

I found something on this old thread about an HP card notebook problem that helped...

You plug in your ethernet and type
> sudo dhclient eth0
At this point, ethernet connected for me, though there's no panel indicator.
Then you

> sudo apt-get install wicd

The mysterious incantations worked. Wicd doesn't look like the standard Lynx network manager, it seems to be some older Python app but it works and so now both wired and wireless work. :P
